Information on Barra, Mozambique, Africa
The area of Barra is 23 square miles, the main village is Castlebay. To the west of Barra has white sandy beaches and the to the east of Barra there are numerous rocky inlets. Barra is rich with stunning scenery, rare flowers and wildlife, which can be appreciated by coastal or hill walks, drives or cycle rides along the many small roads. Car and bicycle hire are available locally.
Places of interest in Barra include a runined church and a museum at Cille Bharra. Every summer Feis Bharraigh brings the whole world together in a culteral festival consintrating on learning and performing of traditional music.
Barra's small airport which is near Northbay is the only airport in the world that uses the beach called An Traigh Mhor as a runway. Planes can only land and take off at low tide meaning that the timetables varies.
